Well today was good motivation to go get a job. I'm digging a foundation for bottom dollar. I have my father in law grade checking for me which is the simplest task, hold the laser and tell me up or down then kick it flat. I'm spoiling into my dump trailer to move the dirt a couple hundred feet away, I have him moving it when it gets full. This was supposed to be a one day job. He wandered off during layout then I explained to him I want him to grade as I dig, he sits down until I fill the trailer then starts while I'm doing nothing waiting for him. Then as he is backing my trailer he keeps getting crooked so he goes into a temper tantrum and starts flooring my truck back and forth, he finally hits a pallet of wood with my dually fender then flies forward across the street up over the curb leaving a trail of dirt as the old couple across the way were watching. He finally stops and when I tell him he just made a huge mess he tells me he didnt, it was the trailer then wouldn't admit he hit the pallet that scratched the **** out of my truck.

Rusty, I wish you'd tow the trailer to So Cal and start working on it. We need the rain.

Chris, a nicely placed .22 round into that dimwit's temple would sure get rid of your headaches.
It would. How do I explain that to my kids, they think he is awesome. Because they are on the same mental level.

Chris, quick question. I'm about to hire one of two companies to jack out my 20" x 20" tile, grind, then install porcelain wood plank tiles. They are also gutting two of my bathrooms and starting over with fresh tile, hot mop, etc. I just checked their licenses and both companies claim they do not have current employees, therefore neither has worker's comp info on file. How to I demand that they would need this before starting work in my house? Both companies claim to have 5-7 employees working for them, so I want to protect myself.

Ask for a current certificate of work comp insurance. The ins company has to send you one if requested, the contractor can not supply this, it must come from the ins company and will have your name on the certificate.

What tom said, the certificate will show their general liability, work comp and commercial auto if they have any. If they make any excuse it is because they dont have insurance, it's only a phone call away and usually doesn't take long to get.

Just ask for their insurance cert and not specifically work comp, you want them to have a general liability policy as well. Commercial auto doesn't matter so much in your case

California it can take a month to update the license on the website. Call me if you have any issues.

Thanks Tom. I just don't want to sound like a dick, but I can see one of their Espanole speakers chopping off a toe and living a lavish life on my dime.
You are responsible if they dont have insurance and get hurt, that is why you request a cert. Tell them they can't start until you get it. At least then you will at least win in court if something happens. Remember California they can only ask you for 10 percent up to a grand up front for payment. The rest has to be billed as completed

The guy who came today said he doesn't ask for any money up front. In mid-project, he will start asking for draws.
That's good, you can always ask for his release and a supplier release before paying if you want to cover everything.
