I don't think the tools needed are that expensive.
I don't know about Jeeps. When my in laws bought the '85 Ford van, they had the gears changed to pull a trailer. It messed up the speedometer and ruined the gas mileage, and my inlaws kept the original gears. When I wanted to put the original gears back, it took a special tool that only Ford had to set the gaps and they wanted $700. for it. So I never changed it. Oh and the local dealer wanted $1000 to change them for me.

Morning Rusty, I believe it's a dial run-out gauge. You have measure where the pinion gear and the ring gear are riding and how much backlash there is.

There's ways to get around it but it's time consuming. Check, recheck, change, check, recheck, change, check and so on.

I'm sure there is, I've never taken one apart or put one together.
I've done several lockers and taken ring gears off but never done gears. I have four sets to do now so I guess I'll learn. Bought gears for both jeeps and an arb locker for the cj8. The yj already has a locker.

The xj has been fully built for a few years now and runs awesome but it has a 4cyl carbed motor so it's gutless with 4.10 gears. Going to 4.88 in that one. Also swapping to a 2 barrel carb. Going to 4.10s in the cj8. Want to keep decent highway mileage.

I had a 2006 super duty that had 4.10 and wanted better towing so went to 4.56 and lost every bit of fuel mileage and top speed.

4:56 is definitely off road only.

I checked with auto part stores and Snap-On and they all told me it was a "Ford only" gauge.

I get so tired of dealing with customer reps. I need a new trailer jack. I have checked with Amazon, Walmart, E bay and Harbor Freight, not one of them can tell me the distance between the mounting bolts on the ones they sell. They can vary between 2 3/4 " to 5 " in the triangle pattern.
